Another great piece. As a practicing psychiatrist I would add that the evaluating psychiatrist is extensively trained AND experienced in the pathologies of the mind. When we suspect something we know what to ask and importantly what to ask in response to any particular answer. So a person says , yes I hear voices. We do not then assume they are hallucinating but ask when and what do they hear. The doorbell and their name only when in the shower. Not hallucinating. And so on. Some forms of gathering information help like a family member or a series of questions for thoroughness like some of the ADHD tests. My problem with the report of new tests is that they never have the power or true potential to become a test, at least not yet. But researchers always report that we have learned so much and will be developing tests soon. I have heard this since 1990 and still no tests.
