I have a daughter to whom I gave this advice (I would never suggest telling this to a victim). She (now a grown woman) appreciated it and shared it with her friends. They are a cosmopolitan bunch. None took it the way you suggest. I certainly see your point, Chris. But how in the world could we have discussions about safety (crime, health, emotional well-being) if concrete suggests like this — given on public television by a New York city police detective in charge of crime prevention — are deemed offensive?
