Patsy-I'm so sorry you had to go through this horror in the jail. I am a psychiatrist and know from experience here in CT that going to jail makes it likely that people will NOT get the medical care they need of almost any kind. The problem is that in the mental health world anything that is allowed to be done will be done too much. It is correct to be wary. But I do agree with you that we must find a way. There are ways to force people to take medicine--become their conservator of person. Then you make all health care decisions. But what about when they say no and resist? How do you enforce this? It gets to be a problem. But wee could at least begin with a system, maybe needing two psychiatrists to examine a person to be sure it is necessary and report to the judge. Something like that. There are ways to move forward and the ACLU shoudl be helping to find what they are not just objecting to every imperfection.
