This is the practice the Buddha set out for the relief of suffering. Meditation is only one of 8 parts. The 8-fold path is a moral path. In western meditation we do not take moral practice too seriously. Meditating that all beings do not suffer is a far cry from living a moral life. There is now socially active Buddhism, but this is still far off the mark. Buddhism is in fact a religion with traditions and a deep moral dimension. Meditation with always be limited without this.
