The title was "Shock the Monkey." What is the point in reviewing your experience other than to make a larger point? That is how people read it and how anyone would read your piece.

I have, in the last decade, had 9 surgeries (with general anesthesia), countless complications and procedures, topped off by stage 4 of a rare and difficult to treat cancer. I did not include this because it is unnecessary. I had countless experiences that make ECT look like the moderate level procedure it is. Lots of people get as sick as I was.. No one writes about these because there is no market for it. And btw, aside from totally remitting suicidality, it also does so with resistant depression, psychosis, and mania. I am sorry you had a bad experience. But you took a life saving procedure that is still poorly understood by the general population and added to the prejudice as well as the prejudice that severely mentally people must endure. Did you read the other comments. "THey still do that!" I suggest you read them and reflect on what those people now think about ECT.
