There is more to say for both sides of this debate. But what I find most important, both as a physician and a regular person, is not to have any rule about pain. There are dangers of over and under treating, but the biggest danger is to ignore people in pain. Each case takes careful consideration about what the best way to help (and not hurt). For a while people were concerned that we'd cure everrything in pyschiatry and we'd lose great voices who were inspired by, for instance, depression. None of this was ever the case, but more to the point, even if it were true, should we not treat certain kinds of pain because of their artistic value?
Of course not. We need not worry about losing voices of pain as there will always be pain from the natural world and, sadly, from the human produced world.
