This is a great piece, Dan. You hit many big issues. The church's stance on LGBT+ and women is untenable. A few words here or there in the Bible mean nothing as the Bible says a lot of things no one would advocate today. For me the biggest problem is the core of Christianity. The idea that Jesus came to die for our sins. Why would God plan this? How does violence redeem us? It proved nothing and is incoherent. Jesus taught us what God wants. The description of the last judgement by Jesus says it all. Nothing about belief in anything. Simply did you help your neighbor when he/she needed it. This basis for a new moral teaching and telling us that rite and ritual are just that and have no spiritual power ("it is not what goes into a man's mouth..." and many other sayings). This was Jesus' teaching. Nothing else. The rest is read into the text over centuries. I will close by noting that Mark, the evangelist closest in time to Jesus, seems unaware of the resurrection. Why does this not bother anyone?
